What is Kathak Dance?

Kathak is an Indian dance form. There are 8 classical dance forms and Kathak is the only dance form from the northern part of India. The word Kathak comes from the word “katha” which means a story.

There are 3 gharanas in Kathak:

  1. Jaipur Gharana: Focuses on warrior like movements, strong movements and more focus on spins, footwork and technique
  2. Lucknow Gharana: Delicate movements and focus on romance
  3. Banaras Gharana: Spirituality vibe. Thumris are a specialty of this gharana
